Double Victory Night
I had known Carol
and Clarence a little socially for a couple of years. They came to see me when they were forty weeks pregnant. They had planned
to birth in the hospital but now the doctor was wanting to induce labor as she had hit the 40 week mark. Normal term pregnancy
is anywhere from thirty-eight to forty-two weeks and this has recently been extended a week to forty-three for first time
mothers. This was early in my experience and I lost all these records in a fire.
Most likely we used castor oil, sex and nipple stimulation to get labor going if she went past forty-one weeks. I may
have used herbal tinctures as well. Now I use homeopathy with good success and you can read the routine in the article on
homeopathy on this site. Clarence called late one afternoon to say Carol had started contractions
in the morn. Now they were regular every fifteen minutes and she'd had some bloody show. This was her third baby
and I headed over. I think on the initial assessment she was 4cm or just entering active labor. Carol was very relaxed
and we chatted and watched TV. An hour or so later, there's a knock on the door. Clarence's
friends have arrived to say he was just elected City Magistrate. They want to take him to the bar to celebrate. He explains
it's not a good time and goes to talk with them on the porch for a few minutes. Carol's contractions remain fifteen
minutes apart. Soon Carol has two contractions five minutes apart. Clarence is planning to receive
the baby. He comes inside; Carol has two more five minute apart contractions and says, "I have to push." I say I
think we should head into the bedroom. When I tell Clarence it's time for him to wash up to receive his baby, his eyes
get as big as silver dollars. Within minutes all is ready and a short time later eight and a
half pound Chanda enters the world into her father's loving hands. I know he considers this his bigger victory of that
night.
